TACIT REFERENCE Some remarks on unarticulated parameters

چکیده
John Perry introduced the idea of thought without representation. At first sight, this idea seems odd: we are surely used to consider that a thought about an object is a representation of that object. However, Perry's idea describes an important and pervasive phenomenon in language and thought. The study of this phenomenon highlights unexplored ways in which context contributes to the interpretation of our statements and beliefs, and points to central facts about our cognitive architecture. The present paper contains only preliminary remarks on Perry's important paper "Thought Without Representation" (1993), and certainly not a definite assessment of his complex view. It is structured as follows. In the first section, I distinguish (following Perry himself) two cases of thought without representation. In the second section, I explore the possibility that some supposed instances of thought without representation really involve something like simplified views of the world. This possibility suggests that thought without representation is in fact simplified thought, which does not rely on unarticulated parameters. In section 3, I argue that this possibility is not obviously wrong, although it does not imply that the notion of thought without representation is useless. In section 4, I describe in more details the move from tacit to articulated reference, which is nothing like an ordinary inference. In the last section, I briefly compare my account with Recanati's.

Unarticulated Tension
The idea of unarticulated constituents is used in several different ways in the philosophy of mind and the philosophy of language. My purpose here is to clarify these uses and thereby illustrate that there is considerable tension between them. More specifically, I will argue that if one endorses the original arguments in support of unarticulated constituents of the contents of thoughts and utte...
متن کاملTacit Knowledge in Requirements
The importance of tacit knowledge in requirements elicitation and understanding is widely accepted but poorly understood. There is no clear definition of tacit knowledge, with definitions spanning knowledge that cannot be articulated to knowledge that is merely unarticulated. The situation is further confused by the fact that the most widely cited author on tacit knowledge (Michael Polanyi) act...
متن کاملProsser Temporal Metaphysics in Z - Land
John Perry (1986) has argued that language, thought and experience often contain unarticulated constituents. John Campbell (1993, 1994, 1998) has taken up a similar theme with his distinction between monadic and relational notions and the related notion of causal indexicals, as has Sydney Shoemaker (1994). I shall argue (using Perry’s terminology) that the presence of unarticulated constituents...
متن کاملGolf Coaches Use Tacit Knowledge to Improve Transfer Performance: Understanding the Mediating Role of Transfer Capacity in Golf Coaching
Background. Golf is relatively new in China, and overall playing skills are low. Although golf coaches are vital in improving golf skills, their teaching skills are underdeveloped. Objectives. This study aims to explore how the coach’s tacit knowledge affects the transfer performance by exploring the factors that affect the teaching ability of Chinese golf coaches. It aims to improve the teach...
متن کاملSOME REMARKS ON ALMOST UNISERIAL RINGS AND MODULES
In this paper we study almost uniserial rings and modules. An R−module M is called almost uniserial if any two nonisomorphic submodules are linearly ordered by inclusion. A ring R is an almost left uniserial ring if R_R is almost uniserial. We give some necessary and sufficient condition for an Artinian ring to be almost left uniserial.
